On Sunday, Yoshiki announced that X Japan intends to play at this year’s Lollapalooza festival, scheduled for August 6-8 in Chicago. Tentative reports of X Japan performing there first surfaced last month, but now it appears that the possibility will become a reality.
As a voting member of the Recording Academy, Yoshiki attended the Grammys on Sunday night. During an interview by reporters on the red carpet, Yoshiki revealed the news about Lollapalooza. It is said that X Japan received an offer from the festival’s organizers to play on the main stage, and the band has decided to take it. A formal announcement with details is expected to be made later this month.
X Japan would be the first Japanese artist to perform on Lollapalooza’s main stage. It would also be the band’s first U.S. concert, though they already have plenty of fans around the world. They had planned a world tour in 2009, but due to various circumstances, they canceled most of their shows. However, if all goes well, X Japan is aiming to revive the world tour this year, starting with the Lollapalooza performance.
The X Japan rock group filmed four music videos from a transparent rooftop platform 50 feet (about 15 meters) over the center of Hollywood on Saturday. The video shoot lasted from 4 in the afternoon to a little past 10 in the evening, and featured fireworks, pyrotechnics, laser lights, three camera cranes, and at least two helicopters. The band performed two songs from its original lineup — “Rusty Nail” and “Endless Rain” — and two more recent songs, “I.V.” and “Jade.”
Guests from Japan and elsewhere took advantage of the rooftop perch at a nearby hostel, while people at local restaurants and Disney’s Soda Fountain and Studio Store at the El Capitan Theatre enjoyed similar views. Actor Danny Masterson (That ’70s Show) posted a photograph of himself from the platform itself. Most fans assembled below the platform near the corner of Hollywood Boulevard and Highland Avenue, just below the Sephora store where fellow Japanese singer Hikaru Utada made her first 2009 American appearance.
Many fans held up handmade signs, and some held up X Japan plush figures and at least one Hello Kitty X Japan “yoshikitty” plush figure. Judging by the flags hoisted by the crowd, fans turned out from Japan, Brazil, and Mexico, in addition to the United States.
X Japan’s most notable anime contributions were the songs in the X² music video collection and later X movie. The animation studio Madhouse adapted both productions from CLAMP’s X manga. The surviving band members — Toshimitsu “Toshi” Deyama, Yoshiki Hayashi, Tomoaki “Pata” Ishizuka, and Hiroshi “Heath” Morie — reunited in 2007, ten years after they first disbanded and nine years after the death of guitarist Hideto “Hide” Matsumoto.
n December 16th Alice Nine held their last concert for 2009. During the 3 hour long event they performed songs from the band’s early years and also their brand new tracks too. musicJAPANplus will soon be posting details about the concert in Press Note, and a full live report will follow in the special features. Please look forward to them.
During the live performance the band announced that they will release their greatest hits album ‘Alice Nine Complete Collection 2006-2009′ on March 24th. They also mentioned that from March 22nd they will embark on a tour around 8 cities. Both announcements were met with shrieks of excitement from the crowds. All 8 performances will be held in small-size venues, so tickets will surely run out quickly.
GACKT kept himself busy throughout 2009. He was asked to express what this year was like for him using just one kanji letter.
With a brush he masterfully wrote ‘謝 (Sha; gratitude)’. “For the past 10 years, my fans have continued to stay beside me, and even when I was acting on a whim they were there to support me. They have also always showed and expressed how happy they were to see me. I feel very grateful to have such fans.”
He then quietly but passionately continued. “For these 10 years I’ve been working to ‘become’ a creator. Now having achieved that, for the next 10 years I have to make various works of art to express the many sides of myself as that creator. I hope everyone will be there to see and understand each step I take. I will put into concrete form the things I should and can do as a creator. I pledge to send you works that will fascinate everybody. Please look forward to them.”
